RELEASE: Colorado GOP Helps Defeat HB 1295

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 27, 2021

Greenwood Village, CO. – Colorado GOP Chairwoman Kristi Burton Brown released a statement following the defeat of HB 1295 in the Colorado House of Representatives:

“The defeat of this misguided and dangerous bill is great news for Colorado students and families.

“As a mom of two elementary school-age children, the fight for better education and support for schools in our state is personal to me. Sadly, this Democrat legislation was soley aimed at taking much needed options away from students in districts across Colorado. I’m proud to lead the only Party in our state that believes that no child should be stuck in an underperforming school.

“We stand with many Colorado parents and other great allies in saying ‘good riddance’ to HB 1295. I hope the Democrats will now join us in supporting Colorado charter schools and students.”

Additional Background:
HB-1295 was sponsored by state Rep. Bacon (D-Denver), who is also a member of the Denver Public School Board (can you say conflict of interest?)
– Under existing law, whenever a district rules against a charter school application, that school can then challenge their board’s decision to the State Board of Education.
– The state board then looks at the facts and makes a determination based on what is best for those students and community.
– This legislation would take take away that due process, and create a “one-size fits all” standard for children in our minority and economically disadvantaged communities.
